paradigm bending architect frank gehry's longtime analyst said most people come to him wanting to make their marriage better or change their life in some way. when an artist comes to me, he said, he wants to know how to change the world.
that sentiment resonated so deeply with me it brought tears to my eyes. what a contribution, what a quest. inherent in being an artist and desiring--even if not consciously articulated--is risk and controversy as not all will value artists' contributions. but to see differently, to consider a fresh twist on something, to be open to another's magic can be transformational, comforting and uncomfortable, evocative, resonant, energy for growth--all which i appreciate as the foundation for stretching our culture to better places.
legacy, contribution, impact. i've been considering mine. consciousness about contribution is important to me. even if my sphere of influence is a tight circle, i value that my work, my life's effect inspires positive energy. hopefully that's the net result. but as we've seen time and again, all it takes is one person to profoundly change the world.
i have recently completed my first edit of a book written as a toolbox for inspiration. nurturing creativity in a demanding world, my blog's intention, is to date, the book i deeply feel i was meant to contribute to the world. my heart's desire is to contribute as a creative, strategies, truths, encouragement, inspirations for all of us to enable us to better listen to our truest inner voice, honor our calling, and live creatively abundant joyful compassionate lives. wouldn't the world be in better balance if we did?
