i read something the other day that inspired me to take stock of what my values habits are. the piece was a blog entry about a person who realized their reflex response was "no." he was a busy professional with lots of demands on his time and when people asked him to extend himself further, he would often respond without thinking, no. what struck me was his realization that he had become NO.
we are our habits. more particularly, we are our values habits. we may cerebrally espouse certain core values but they are only truly our values when we habitually act in accord with them. it's beneficial to look regularly at where we are in terms of where the values rubber meets the road for us. in what ways are we not connecting to people in the ways we might prefer? are we underselling ourselves in terms of our own dreams and capabilities because we habitually play it safe? do we opt for the known rather than venture outside our routines and comforts to explore and adventure?
what values habits do we want to cultivate to bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be in life?
values habits are a choice. they are a repetition. a practice.
a new habit--whether it's saying YES rather than NO, or taking relationships to a new level, or stretching into our dream pursuits--takes time to become a reflex. 28 days seems to be the minimal threshhold for incubating a new practice. once we put our new values habit into practice for a month, we feel different. we feel optimized, we feel envigorated because we can see how a decision we made for our life has taken root.
values habits for success--28 days and no prescription necessary.
